Find Your Passion
If there is one thing you could do to transform your life, it is finding something you are passionate about and doing it as a career, a business or a hobby. Although this isn’t easy, it is worth the journey as it all pays off when you are doing something you love.
The largest question to ask yourself is: Are you happy with where you are today?
What would you do if failure was not an option?
Imagine you could wake up every morning, excited to work and start the day. Imagine if it did not even feel like work because were constantly doing what you are passionate about.
With the current pandemic more and more people are reaching out to me to have a clarity or purpose call, or to become my mentee as they have felt that they are not living the life that they had hoped. And when all else crumbles around you, through no fault of your own it often results in reflective thinking.
So how do you find your passion? Here are a few ideas:
1. Try lots of things. Experiment, especially when young!
Do not be afraid to try new things! Life gives you many opportunities and it is up to you to explore and embrace them. Get into the habit of pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone even if the process may feel daunting. You never know, this could lead to you finding your passion and it could be your new future career. This is an opportunity to look at things from a different perspective and just enjoy yourself, learning what you like and what you don’t.
This may sound easy, but it isn’t. Experimenting takes time and you might surprise yourself with how you explore your new passion. Immerse yourself in something new and don’t give up, you will find that interest that will develop into a passion.
Take up that class that you’ve been putting off, register for that talk your friend mentioned a weeks months ago and get that new art set to begin your drawing journey. Whatever it may be, now is your time to embrace it, experiment and make the most of it!
2. Narrow it down
Hopefully, by experimenting and exploring different interests you can now narrow it down to a particular hobby you find the most interesting. Has it ignited a passion? Do want to learn more about it?
Ask yourselves these kinds of questions, it will help you realise if you are slowly developing a new passion. You might even narrow down a few hobbies and interests and want to combine them, thinking how you can pursue your newly found passion into a career. This will be a time where you have to reflect and naturally see what interests are you the most drawn to.
3. From idea to niche expert
Having a passion will motivate you to learn more about it. You will fall in love everyday with your newly found passion, questioning how you can make an income from something you enjoy. This is a time to stay motivated and practice.
Practice, practice, practice!
This cannot be emphasised enough. You want to become an expert in your field: read books, explore the internet, go to panel talks, talk to those in the field you want to enter, get a mentor etc. You will begin to expand your knowledge and your passion will only continue to grow. This is where you will be the most motivated. Your passion will motivate you to keep growing and become an expert, continuously learning more. This will be an overwhelming yet enjoyable experience, it is a time you want to embrace, soon you will realise you have finally found something you want to carry on doing for the rest of your life. Don’t place too much pressure on yourself, you will be learning all the time even when you are pursuing your passion as a career or business, evolution is a necessary part of growth. Enjoy the process.
4. Become OBSESSED
Once you have found your passion, you will become obsessed—in a healthy way. Your passion will motivate you every morning and you will feel like you never have to work another day in your life. You will enjoy waking up every morning and going to work as it will be days of you doing what you love. Yes, if you follow the entrepreneurial route there may be down times but being in business will bring your both the lowest lows and the highest peaks—prepare for both.
The hope is that the obsession will only motivate you more and more, developing your passion further. In this current time many of the entrepreneurs I speak to are afraid of losing what they have built but also excited to start again.
You can then take this passion and help others that may have felt the same way you once did, providing classes and talks to share your experiences. Thus allowing your obsession to you becoming a gateway to you becoming the expert in your chosen niche, that is where the value is and it is in becoming an expert that you can monetise your knowledge.
Remember, make sure to embrace this change in your life. You have worked hard to get to this point, all those hours you have put, when it finally pays off remember that - You deserve it!
I will be very honest with you, the process isn’t easy and will not always be a smooth ride (more likely to feel like a roller coaster), let’s face it, that is life. But what is important is that you are doing what you love, which will only reflect on your attitude to life and continue to motivate you to develop your passion further.
Always remember to never give up on your dreams!
